Rare Celestial Encounter: Capturing the International Space Station Passing Near Venus in Daylight
Astronomy enthusiasts and photographers alike often strive to document the grandeur of our universe, but capturing rare planetary and orbital phenomena is a challenge that requires precision and patience. Recently, I had the distinct pleasure of photographing a remarkable celestial event: the International Space Station (ISS) passing in close proximity to the planet Venus during broad daylight—a feat only one other time in recorded history has this pairing been visually documented.
This unprecedented image, which I have titled “Worlds Apart,” marks only the second recorded instance of a detailed photograph showcasing the ISS and Venus together — the first being my NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD)-winning image from April of last year.
Precise Planning for a Rare Conjunction
The photograph was meticulously planned and executed from a scenic park in Edmonds, Washington. Using careful calculations of celestial positions, I identified the optimal moment yesterday evening at 6:38:05 PM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). This precise timing allowed me to visualize and capture the fleeting alignment, where the ISS passes just fractions of a degree from Venus in the daytime sky.
The Challenge of Daylight Astrophotography
Photographing such an event before sunset, when the sky remains illuminated, presents unique challenges. Daylight diminishes contrast and makes capturing faint objects difficult. Nevertheless, with the right equipment and technique, it’s possible to reveal astronomical details in conditions that are typically considered non-ideal for such observations.
Technical Details and Equipment
The imaging process involved high-quality equipment to achieve the level of detail and clarity needed:
- Telescope: Celestron C9.25
- Camera: ZWO ASI662MC cooled monochrome camera
- Filters: UV/IR cut filter to enhance contrast and image sharpness
Using this setup, I captured the event and later processed the images with specialized software to bring out the fine details.
Processing and Final Image Composition
The raw data underwent a series of processing steps to optimize clarity:
- ASICapture for initial image capture
- AutoStakkert! for stacking multiple frames
- Registax6 for wavelet sharpening
- GIMP and Lightroom for color correction and final adjustments
The resulting photograph vividly illustrates the apparent sizes of both objects; despite their actual vast size difference—Venus being similar in dimension to Earth and the ISS roughly the size of a football stadium—their apparent sizes in the sky can appear surprisingly similar due to the immense distance separating them.
